Drawing with pastels is one of the most expressive and enjoyable ways to create art. From soft colour transitions to bold, striking details, pastels give you a beautiful blend of control and freedom. But if you're new to the medium, knowing where to start can feel a little overwhelming. At Creative Barn, our pastel art classes are designed to help you ease in with confidence, a great starting point is our FREE Pastel Basics Guide. Whether you're using soft pastels, hard pastels, or pastel pencils, here are 5 practical tips to help you make the most of this vibrant medium.
Pastels need a bit of texture to grip onto. Look for pastel paper with a “tooth” or textured surface like pastel paper, sanded paper, or even textured watercolour paper. The right surface will hold the pigment better and make layering a whole lot easier.
It’s tempting to smudge everything when you’re just starting out, but too much blending can actually make your colours look muddy. Try blending selectively, and keep some of your marks loose and bold to add texture and energy to your piece.
Yes, pastels can be messy but that’s all part of the fun! Keep a soft cloth or baby wipes nearby, and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. You can even use your fingers to blend in some areas for a personal, tactile effect.
Like any medium, pastels take practice. Our pastel art classes are designed to help you learn through doing the work with relaxed, step-by-step guidance and creative prompts to keep you inspired. The more you play, the more confident you’ll become.
If you’re curious about learning a new art form that’s bold, tactile, and endlessly fun, our pastel art classes are a fantastic place to start. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to expand your skills, we’ve got everything you need to feel confident and creative.
